Bike & Sail IJsselmeer

During this cycling holiday on board of the two-master Wapen fan Fryslan you can enjoy historic port cities and beautiful nature reserves on the IJsselmeer. The cycle routes are located on paved cycle paths, country roads and along secondary roads with little traffic. There are no significant slopes. The bike tour is entirely at your own risk.

Possible itinerary, depending on weather and wind:

Saturday: Amsterdam - Volendam | test ride (10 km)
Your Bike & Sail week starts in Amsterdam. The crew welcomes you on board and as soon as all guests have embarked, the ship sails on its motor to Volendam. From the harbour of this former fishing village a short warm-up ride will take you through the rural nature reserve Waterland with its many villages.

Sunday: Volendam - Hoorn (32 or 51 km)
A very Dutch start to the day: you cycle to a nearby cheese and clog shop for a short demonstration of cheese and clog making, and of course a cheese tasting. Continue on the dikes to Purmerend, in the heart of De Beemster. Divided into a rigid geometric pattern of squares, this polder is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Your next destination is Edam, a beautiful town that is well worth a walk and is known worldwide for its cheese. Via the main dike of the IJsselmeer you reach Volendam, where the ship is moored. Here you have time to visit the many souvenir shops on your own. Later in the evening the ship sails to Hoorn.

Monday: Hoorn - Enkhuizen (28 km or 39 km)
Through small rural villages today's ride will take you to Enkhuizen. You pass mill De Krijgsman, the highest mill in North Holland and one of the few old Dutch mills still in use for the commercial production of flour. In the 17th century, Enkhuizen was one of the richest cities in the Netherlands, thanks to the port that shipped spices - then still precious - from Asia. Be surprised by the stately mansions, canals, churches and city walls that reflect the rich history and wealth of the city.

Tuesday: Enkhuizen - Stavoren (25 or 37 km)
When the weather is fine we sail over the IJsselmeer to the port of Stavoren in Friesland (approx. 4 hours). On board you can, if you like, help the skipper with sailing. Or you can just sit back and relax on deck and enjoy the trip, while keeping an eye on the ins and outs. Upon arrival there is a bike ride planned that will first take you to Hindeloopen, a picturesque and lively fishing village. From there you will head to Workum, home of the Jopie Huisman Museum, dedicated to this famous Frisian painter.

Wednesday: Stavoren - Lemmer (40 km)
Following the dike along the IJsselmeer we arrive in Gaasterland, known for its sand hills of more than 10 meters high. If you leave the dike, you will arrive in the Rijsterbos. Through this 300 year old forest you drive to Balk and then you arrive in the fortified town of Sloten, one of the smallest cities in the Netherlands. Take your time to quietly wander through the narrow streets, relax and find a place for lunch on your own. The last part of today's trip will take you to the Lemmer fishing port, where the ship will dock for the night. A walk to the city after dinner is definitely worth it.

Thursday: Lemmer - Urk (20 km)
In the morning we sail across the IJsselmeer to the port of Urk. On board, you can help the captain sail the ship if you wish. Or you can simply sit back on deck and enjoy the invigorating journey, while keeping watch for marine bird life. In Urk youmay stroll through the narrow streets and alleys. The houses in this picturesque fishing village were built close to one another on elevated grounds to protect them against the water, and that is still visible today. In the afternoon a short optional bike ride is planned through the Northeast polder.

Friday: Urk - Lelystad - Blocq van Kuffeler | Blocq van Kuffeler - Amsterdam (20 km or 39 km)
The day starts with approximately three hours of sailing to Lelystad, capital of the province of Flevoland that was entirely reclaimed from the sea. In its harbour you’ll disembark for your last day of cycling. You’ll ride through the Oostvaardersplassen—a nature reserve on new land, left to find its own balance like nature did in old times on old land. Sections of the ride wind through forested areas, while others give you panoramic views of expansive reed beds and marshes. This is a birdwatchers’ paradise. The ship picks you up in the small harbor of Oostvaardersdiep for the return voyage to Amsterdam (approx. 2 hours). Celebrate this marvelous week around the Ijsselmeer while having a farewell dinner aboard the ship.

Saturday: Amsterdam
Your trip ends today with a nice breakfast. At 9.30 am it is time to say goodbye to the ship, the crew and the other guests and return home.

This is a place where you can experience pure nature: the sea, the wind and the sun. You can look forward to a nice adventurous tour with a variety of activities and experiences. What are you waiting for? Let's go !
