Cooking together on board during your school sailing trip

We provide the ideas. Your group does the cooking!

What's on the menu today?

Cooking for a whole class doesn't have to be complicated. Especially when you know exactly what ingredients you'll need.

That's why we've selected a number of meals that are tasty, easy to prepare and suitable for larger groups.

How about:

  • The Ship's Wrap Bar: Everyone creates their own wraps with delicious fillings and fresh vegetables.
  • The Ship's Bolognese: A big pot of pasta with tomato sauce. Always a favourite!
  • Sailors' Nasi Goreng: Rice with vegetables, chicken or a vegetarian alternative.
  • Sailors' Chilli con or sin Carne: A hearty pot of chilli, with meat or a tasty vegetarian version.
  • Dutch Sailors' Stamppot: A traditional Dutch dish of mashed potatoes and endive, perfect after a breezy day on the water.
  • The Ship's Tikka Masala Curry: A mild curry with rice and vegetables.

For each dish, we've put together a shopping list with approximate quantities for 25 to 30 people.

Of course, you can adapt the recipes to suit your group's preferences, size and dietary requirements.

Sail together, cook together, enjoy together

On board a traditional sailing ship, everyone is part of the crew. During the day, students help hoist the sails, steer the ship and navigate. And in the evening? That's when the cooking team takes over!

Some students chop the vegetables, others stir the pots, while someone else sets the table. Before you know it, a delicious meal is ready to serve. Everyone gathers around the table, shares stories from the day's adventures and makes plans for tomorrow. That's what a school trip is all about!

Cooking together is also a great way for students to take responsibility. They learn to plan, work as a team and look out for one another. And let's face it: everything tastes even better after an active day out on the water!

The BoatBoatBoat Galley Cookbook

Cooking for a class of 30 students? That might sound like quite a challenge. But with our BoatBoatBoat Galley Cookbook, it's a whole lot easier!

Inside you'll find:

  • Easy recipes for large groups.
  • Shopping lists with quantities for 25 to 30 people.
  • Clear, step-by-step cooking instructions.

That way, every cooking team knows exactly what to do.

Some students chop vegetables, others stir the pots and the rest make sure the table is ready. And afterwards? Time to enjoy the meal together!

Grocery shopping? That's entirely up to you!

We provide the meal ideas, recipes and shopping lists. How you get the ingredients is completely up to you.

There are several options.

1. Order your groceries online
Don't fancy pushing several shopping trolleys around a supermarket to feed an entire class? You can order your groceries online in advance from a supermarket of your choice. Simply select a suitable delivery or collection time.

If you'd like your groceries delivered to the harbour, make sure delivery is available at the right location and time.

2. Bring your own groceries
Visit the supermarket before departure and bring the groceries on board with you. Our ingredient lists provide a handy starting point for your shopping. That way, you'll have a good idea of how much pasta, rice, vegetables and other ingredients you'll need.

3. Shop along the way
Another fun option: stop at a harbour town during your sailing trip and pick up fresh groceries together. It's a great way to combine a stroll through the town with shopping for that evening's meal.

Just remember that sailing routes and harbour stops can depend on the weather. That's why we recommend bringing enough groceries for at least the first few days.

Whichever option you choose, the school is responsible for purchasing, paying for, transporting and storing the groceries.

What about breakfast and lunch?

Of course, these meals are also part of a great school sailing trip!

Think fresh bread, different spreads and sandwich fillings, fruit, dairy products and crunchy vegetables. For lunch, you can prepare sandwiches, enjoy a meal together on board or pack lunches for a day out. How much you'll need depends on the number and age of the students and how many days you'll be staying on board.

For breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks, the school prepares its own shopping list. Our planning guide helps you organise the meals and decide when to buy your groceries.

Vegetarian meals or special dietary requirements?

No problem! Several dishes in our Galley Cookbook also have vegetarian options.

Are there students with allergies, food intolerances or other dietary requirements? Make sure you take these into account when choosing the meals and buying the groceries.

Always check the ingredients and labels of the products you purchase. Our recipes are suggestions and can be adapted to suit your group.

Why are our meal ideas so handy?

Organising a school sailing trip is already quite a job. Booking the ship, informing parents, preparing the programme, organising cooking teams...

Wouldn't it be nice if you didn't have to come up with every evening meal for a large group as well?

With our meal ideas:

  • No need to search for suitable recipes from scratch.
  • You have a useful guideline for the quantities you'll need.
  • You decide where and when to buy your groceries.
  • You can adapt the menu to suit your budget and dietary preferences.
  • Students take an active role in preparing the meals.
  • The Galley Cookbook gives your cooking teams a practical guide to follow.

That saves a lot of planning! And leaves more time for what really matters: enjoying an unforgettable school trip together.
